How to Make Chicken Fajitas in an Electric Pressure Cooker

Cris here.

As I mentioned the other day, we have been working on converting some of our favorite crock pot recipes into Instant Pot recipes for those of you who enjoy using electric pressure cookers. One of my favorite weekly meals is our Crock Pot Chicken Fajitas, so the other day when I was in a pinch for time I tried it in our Instant Pot.

After my initial test, I was thrilled at the time it saved but not as happy with the texture of the bell peppers– they fell a part too easily. SO, every time since then I have just made sure to cut my bell pepper slices a little bit thicker than I do for the crock pot version and the result has been perfect! I just love having this quick option for a slow cooker recipe we love so much!

What is the equivalent of 4 hours in the slow cooker in the Instant Pot? ›

Generally, if your slow cooker meat, soup, or stew recipe calls for 8 hours on the low setting or about 4 hours on the high setting, it should be fully cooked in about 25 to 30 minutes in the Instant Pot. For chicken or turkey, use the 15-minute poultry button. While volume doesn't matter, density does.

Does an Instant Pot cook faster than a crock pot? ›

Time: The pressure cooking function of the Instant Pot allows it to cook food much faster than a slow cooker. For instance, a pork shoulder in a slow cooker takes at least 6 hours on high to become shreddable. In an Instant Pot, you can have pulled pork in an hour.

How do you keep chicken from getting rubbery in the Instant Pot? ›

Why is my Instant Pot shredded chicken rubbery? Chicken can get a rubbery texture in the instant pot when over cooked. To avoid this, try not to over cook your chicken.

Can you leave Instant Pot slow cooker on overnight? ›

If you are slow cooking in the Instant Pot, you should be able to leave your dish cooking overnight for as long as the recipe dictates. Anything that calls for 8 hours cooking time should be sufficient as long as you make sure you're up in time to take it out of the slow cooker once it's finished.

Which is better crock pot or pressure cooker? ›

Slow cookers are much better for cooking root vegetables and tough cuts of meat because the long, low-temperature cooking process is great for adding moisture and breaking down fat. Pressure cookers can get hot enough for meats and vegetables to brown in them when cooking, but slow cookers can't.

What's the difference between a pressure cooker and a crock pot? ›

Pressure cookers and slow cookers both offer cooks a convenient way to get a meal on the table without a lot of fuss. The big difference between the two in the battle of crockpot vs pressure cooker is a simple one. Pressure cookers cook food quickly while slow cookers cook food – wait for it – slowly.

Is Instapot worth it? ›

Yes, the Instant Pot is widely considered an effective and versatile pressure cooker. Many users find it worth the price due to its convenience, time-saving features, and ability to perform various cooking functions in one appliance.

Is 4 hours in slow cooker enough? ›

If a dish usually takes: 15-30 mins, cook it for 1-2 hours on High or 4-6 hours on Low. 30 mins – 1 hour, cook it for 2-3 hours on High or 5-7 hours on Low. 1-2 hours, cook it for 3-4 hours on High or 6-8 hours on Low.

Should I pressure cook or slow cook chicken breast? ›

Chicken breasts are a less ideal choice for slow cooking. One reason why you shouldn't make boneless chicken breasts in a slow cooker is because they're too low in fat to withstand cooking for a long time. Your final product will likely come out tough and chewy.

Does chicken get tough in Instant Pot? ›

Oddly enough, it can be really challenging to get the right texture when cooking boneless chicken breasts. They cook quickly in the Instant Pot, but if you don't cook them long enough they get a weird, rubber-like texture that's nearly impossible to chew, and if you cook them too long, their texture gets dry.

Does chicken get more tender in crock pot? ›

Slow cooking uses moist heat. The slow cooker is best for meats that have a lot of connective tissue and that are very tough (and typically fairly inexpensive). The connective tissue is turned to gelatin after slow cooking in moist heat for several hours. That is why tough meats become “fork tender” in the slow cooker.

Is it better to pressure cook or slow cook meat? ›

This completely depends on the type of meat you are planning on cooking. Because slow cookers take longer to cook, they are better suited to breaking down fat in meat while adding moisture. So if you are planning on cooking a whole rump beef, then a slow cooker is a better choice.
