Subtitles are helpful, but they can be distracting if you don’t need them. We’ll explain how to turn closed captioning off, how to turn it back on, and how to get rid of the white box that sometimes appears on your Amazon Fire TV.

How Do I Get Rid of Subtitles on My Fire Stick?

If someone left the subtitles on and you can’t figure out how to turn them off, follow these steps:

From the home screen, navigate across the top banner to Settings > Subtitles > Off.
If the subtitles are still on, make sure they’re turned off in the Accessibility menu, too. Toggle them off by going to Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions.

You can use the Amazon Fire TV app or the Fire TV remote to navigate menus.

Within Apps

Many apps have their own closed captioning options, which work independently from the Fire Stick’s main settings. If the video you’re watching still has subtitles, you can usually find the options to disable them by doing one of the following:

Press the Down button. The closed captioning may be a hidden menu at the bottom of the screen.
Pause the video. If you see the letters “CC” on the right side of the screen, go there to toggle the closed captioning off.

How Do I Put Subtitles on My Fire Stick?

To turn the subtitles on, you can use the app-specific instructions written above, or you can turn them on in the Fire Stick settings:

From the home screen, go to Settings > Subtitles > On.
You can also access them by going to Settings > Accessibility > On.

How Do I Get Rid of the White Box on My Fire Stick?

A large white box may have appeared at the bottom of your screen after a software update. This box is called the Text Banner. It’s an Accessibility feature that displays information about whatever you have selected on the screen in a high-contrast box for improved visibility.

Press the Pause/Play button to toggle the box on and off.
To disable the Text Banner, go to Settings > Accessibility > Text Banner > Text Banner Toggle.

If you want to keep using the Text Banner, you can change the size of the banner and the font size and color.
