Ingredients

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • Feta cheese – Get a block of feta, not the pre-crumbled kind. Full-fat varieties will provide the best taste and texture.
  • Greek yogurt –Use plain Greek yogurt; you can use 0% for a lighter whipped feta dip or whole milk Greek yogurt for a creamier consistency.
  • Lemon
  • Garlic – A garlic press is perfect for mincing the garlic so no one gets a big chunk in their dip!
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

For the garnish:

  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Fresh basil
  • Red pepper flakes – You can skip these for a milder dip, or replace them with freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Olive oil – Use a high-quality extra-virgin olive oil with a fruity aroma and flavor.

Variations

  • Add chopped fresh herbs like parsley, oregano, dill, or chives.
  • Swap out the feta cheese for goat cheese for a different flavor.
  • Use roasted red peppers instead of sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Instead of olive oil, drizzle honey over the top before serving.
  • Sprinkle sumac onto the dip; this is the “red stuff” you’ll see on hummus at Mediterranean restaurants.

How to Make Whipped Feta Dip

  1. Process the dip ingredients. Crumble the feta cheese into your food processor or blender, along with the yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper. Blend until the mixture is uniformly smooth, about 3 to 4 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed.
  2. Finish: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Then, top it with the sun-dried tomatoes and basil, and sprinkle on the red pepper flakes. Drizzle with the olive oil, and serve.

Quick Tip

If a smoother consistency is desired, press the mixture through a fine mesh strainer, pushing any leftover crumbles of feta through.

FAQs

Why is my whipped feta grainy? ›

(Note: A stand mixer is not able to break down the feta well and shouldn't be used for this purpose.) Feta is crumbly, so even after lots of blending and processing, it's likely your spread will have a grainy texture.

How do you use a block of feta cheese? ›

Feta is remarkably versatile and can be used practically anywhere that calls for a salty cheese. I crumble it over salads and soups, toss it with roasted vegetables, grains, and pastas, and use it in pies and galettes. Feta can also be served on its own with a plate of olives, peppers, olive oil, and fresh flatbread.

How do you fix grainy whipped cream? ›

The next thing you've got a bowl of overwhipped cream. The good news is that you can rescue it with our handy tip. Simply add a tablespoon or two of cold milk to the cream and whisk again to return the cream to the perfect texture.

How do you fix gritty whipped cream? ›

Most batches of overwhipped cream can be saved using this easy trick: With the mixer running at low speed, slowly drizzle cold, unwhipped heavy cream into the mixing bowl. Keep adding cream until the broken whipped cream regains its fluffy texture.

Is feta cheese a healthy fat? ›

Contains beneficial fatty acids

Feta cheese contains good amounts of a fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Animal studies suggest this fatty acid appears to improve body composition by reducing body fat and increasing lean mass. Cheese made from sheep's milk has higher levels of CLA.

What pairs well with feta cheese? ›

It pairs well with fruit, like watermelon or peaches, but is equally as delicious with crunchy cucumbers or hearty collard greens. Feta is classically paired with olives, lemon, and fresh herbs like mint, but can also be used less traditionally like in our One-Pot Pasta Primavera with Bacon and Feta.

Why does my whipped cream taste grainy? ›

I believe the grainy texture comes from over-whipping. In fact, keep whipping and you'll end up with butter.

Is feta cheese gritty? ›

Texture: Since the curd is just lightly pressed together, Feta is very crumbly, and works beautifully as a topping to other dishes. When you put it in your mouth, however, high quality Feta will become quite creamy, not grainy.

How do you know if feta cheese has gone bad? ›

Signs Your Feta Has Gone Bad

If you notice your feta has picked up a funny taste, like if it's overly sour or suddenly has bitter notes, this means that something's not right. Additionally, noticeable signs of mold growth, such as dark or green discoloration on the cheese, are clues that something is amiss.

Why does cream cheese get grainy? ›

Since cream cheese is about half water, it is especially sensitive to the formation and melting of ice crystals that happens during freezing and thawing. When ice crystals form, the previously emulsified water separates from the cheese curds, causing the thawed cheese to turn grainy and ricotta-like.
