SNOW SLIME FOR WINTER PLAY!

There’s more than one way to play with snow this season, and it’s called homemade snow slime! Maybe you have piles of the real stuff outside right now, or you only dream about seeing real snow. Either way, we have fun ways to play with snow indoors, snow slime!

We have two very fun videos to check out below. First is our melting snowman slime. The other is our snowflake slime with crystal clear slime. Both are fun and easy to make and use different recipes. Check them out!

SLIME MAKING WITH KIDS

The biggest reason for slime fails is not reading through the recipe! People always contact me with: “Why didn’t this work?” Most of the time, the answer has been a lack of attention to supplies needed, reading the recipe, and actually measuring the ingredients!

So give it a try, and let me know if you need help. On a rare occasion, I have gotten an old batch of glue, and there is no fixing that!

STORING YOUR SNOW SLIME

I get a lot of questions regarding how I store my slime. Usually, we use a reusable container, either plastic or glass. If you keep your slime clean, it will last for several weeks. You can also buy a stack of deli containers. Check out our slime supplies list and resource.

If you forget to store your slime in a closed container, it does actually last a couple of days uncovered. If the top gets crusty, fold it into itself.

If you want to send kids home with a bit of slime from a camp, party, or classroom project, I would suggest packages of reusable containers from the dollar store. For large groups, we have used condiment containers, as seen here.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND SNOW SLIME

Slime is made by combining PVA glue with a slime activator. Common slime activators are borax powder, liquid starch, saline solution, or contact solution. The borate ions in the slime activator {sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid} mix with the PVA {polyvinyl-acetate} glue and form this extraordinary stretchy substance or slime. This process is called cross-linking!

The glue is a polymer made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules flow past one another, keeping the glue in a liquid state. The addition of water is important to this process. Water helps the strands slide more easily.

When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and is thicker and rubberier like slime!
